What is The Blockchain?

In Clash of Streamers, the
Blockchain
building is a place that players can use to interact with the Ethereum blockchain. Through the
Blockchain
building, players can trade, rent, sell, and manage all of their
Blockchain
heroes and pets - and maybe even earn some
DUBI
(and real money) in the process!

Clash of Streamers is the very first game to fully incorporate and integrate blockchain functionality and introduce it to a mainstream audience. Even though Clash of Streamers introduces the blockchain in a form much easier to understand and consume than most other mediums, it can still be a bit complicated.

Throughout this guide, we'll be demystifying the blockchain and talk about how it plays a part in Clash of Streamers. We’ll start from the basics of the Ethereum blockchain, and end off by discussing how you can potentially make money through the
Blockchain
in Clash of Streamers (if you play smart).

The blockchain is an extremely interesting phenomenon - so it’s a good idea to be ahead of the curve and get a grip on it before this new wave of technology starts to take the world by storm.

The Ethereum Blockchain

All blockchain functionality in Clash of Streamers is made possible through the Ethereum blockchain. However, before we discuss exactly what you can do with the blockchain in Clash of Streamers, let’s take a step back and first discuss blockchain technology.

So, what is the Ethereum blockchain?

The blockchain itself is a decentralized technology, meaning that no one party is in control and can make decisions on behalf of others.

For example, Epic Games is the sole company in control and in charge of the game Fortnite.

This gives them the power and ability to do any of the following:
  • They can delete (or remove) access to your account, getting rid of all of your progress (or loot)
  • They can shut down their servers, preventing anybody from playing the game

While these are unlikely scenarios, they are definite possibilities when data is under the control of one central party (in this case, Epic Games).

However, with the blockchain, data is stored and maintained globally, by thousands of different people across the world. No sole party can choose to delete or modify any of your data without the approval of others.

Looking back to the previous scenario, if Fortnite (or a chunk of it) was on the blockchain, the game, and your progress in the game, would be immortal. Epic Games would not be able to delete your accounts, remove access, or anything like that.

This is what I mean when I talk about the decentralized nature of the blockchain!

Now that we’ve discussed the decentralized nature of the blockchain, how exactly does the Ethereum blockchain come into play?

The Ethereum blockchain can be seen as the second iteration of blockchain technologies (the first being Bitcoin). Unlike Bitcoin which was simply used as a means of transferring wealth between two parties, Ethereum is quite different.

Where Bitcoin can be compared to old flip phones, Ethereum can be compared to smartphones with touchscreens, housing downloadable (and creatable) apps, and everything in between.

Essentially, the most significant difference between Ethereum and Bitcoin is that on the Ethereum blockchain, anybody can kind of create their own ‘app’ which exists on the Ethereum blockchain. These are often called ‘dapps’ (decentralized apps), since blockchain is decentralized by nature.

This is how Clash of Streamers is able to have blockchain functionality!

Reading through this overview, you might assume that the blockchain is extremely simple. This could not be further from the truth! There is a lot more info related to blockchain on the technical side of things, which we will not be discussing here.

This overview should give you enough knowledge to understand the rest of the Ethereum concepts, and eventually apply that knowledge to Clash of Streamers.

Ether

Ether (sometimes referred to as Ethereum) is the primary cryptocurrency on the Ethereum blockchain. If you are going to interact with anything on the Ethereum blockchain, chances are you’re going to need some Ether to do so!

Some uses for Ether are the following:
  • Paying transaction fees (gas)
  • Purchasing other tokens on the Ethereum blockchain

Like Bitcoin, Ether can be transferred to and from other people. By other people, I am referring to other ‘wallets’ which are under the control of different people; more on wallets later!

It is with Ether that the whole Ethereum blockchain is able to function. Users on the Ethereum blockchain use Ether to interact with various applications on the blockchain, and pay Ether to the thousands of volunteers in the world who are maintaining and ensuring the validity and security of the network.

In Clash of Streamers, Ether is needed to partake in blockchain related activity. Whether you plan on selling a hero, renting a hero, or something else; whatever it may be, you’ll need Ether!

The primary reason for this is, well… transaction fees, also known as gas - we’ll talk about that in the next section.

So, how do you get Ether?

In most cases, you need to buy Ether through a cryptocurrency exchange. Most cryptocurrency exchanges allow you to purchase Ether by funding your account through a bank transfer, however some also allow purchases through Credit/Debit Cards!

If you are looking to purchase Ether to allow you to interact with the Ethereum blockchain, you need to setup an account on a cryptocurrency exchange and go through the entire process yourself.

If you are confused about how to get started, take a look at the Buying PRPS & DUBI Guide to learn about different options for cryptocurrency exchanges, as well as how exactly you can purchase Ether on them.

On your exchange of choice, you will likely be able to buy and sell Ether. This means that, if you’re lucky enough to earn some Ether for free, or if you hold onto it for long enough, you can eventually sell that Ether for a profit!
This sort of pushes things into the topic of cryptocurrency price speculation which we will not be discussing in this guide.

However, if this topic does interest you, you can read the PRPS & DUBI Guide to read about how speculation plays a part in the development and growth of the Clash of Streamers ecosystem, as well as how you can potentially profit off of it.

Transaction Fees (Gas)

On the Ethereum blockchain, whenever you make a transaction, you need to pay a transaction fee. This transaction fee is paid in the form of Ether.

For example, take a look at the following scenario:
  1. You are looking to buy some
    PRPS
    or
    DUBI
    off of
    DubiEx.
  2. You choose to buy 300
    PRPS
for a total of 5 Ether.
  3. In addition to spending 5 Ether on the purchase, you also spend an extra 0.001 Ether for the transaction fee.

This transaction fee is made to the people who are maintaining and ensuring the stability and security of the Ethereum network.

No matter what the transaction is, you’ll always need to pay a small transaction fee! This transaction fee is often referred to as ‘gas’, since it is seen as the fuel for the Ethereum network.

Certain transactions will use up more gas, while others will use up less.

The price you pay for the transaction fee depends on the complexity of the transaction, as well as the speed at which you want the transaction to complete.

Essentially, this transaction fee system gives users on the Ethereum network the flexibility to complete transactions at their own pace, for a price of their choosing. Often you’ll see the term ‘gas price’ floating around. The gas price simply determines how fast your transaction will go through, as well as its cost.

For example:
  • Higher gas price = faster transaction at a higher cost
  • Lower gas price = slower transaction at a smaller cost

Programs like Metamask will automatically set the gas for the transaction so that it completes in a reasonable time frame (< 5 mins), while also being reasonably priced.

In Clash of Streamers, everything is automatically set for you, so you don’t see any of this! However, it’s good to keep this information in mind in case you look to purchase
PRPS
or
DUBI
off of DubiEx (or do anything else on the Ethereum blockchain).

Wallets

An Ethereum wallet is essentially what holds all of your Ether, in addition to any Ethereum tokens (like
PRPS
&
DUBI
). You can think of it like a real life wallet, however it is more closely compared to a bank account; in the blockchain space, you are in charge of all of your funds.

This can be extremely powerful since it gives you the freedom to do whatever you want with your money, at any time of your choosing. However, it can also be extremely dangerous. If you aren’t careful, you can lose access to all of your funds without any way to recover them.

At its core, an Ethereum wallet has two primary components:
  • A public component (public address)
  • A private component (private key, or 12-word passphrase)

A 12-word passphrase (or mnemonic phrase) is a series of words which is used to generate your wallet. You can think of your 12-word passphrase like your bank login/details.

Here is an example of a 12-word passphrase:

DO NOT USE THIS PASSPHRASE AS YOUR OWN.

Essentially, when you setup your Metamask or Clash of Streamers wallet using a 12-word passphrase, a list of wallets are generated for you. You can then access any of those wallets to store, send, and receive your Ether,
PRPS
, and
DUBI
.

However, there is something extremely important to be aware of: anybody with your 12-word passphrase can access your funds, so you need to keep it private!

Since your 12-word passphrase is like your bank login, it’s used to access all of your funds. However, unlike banks, there are no fallbacks in place. If somebody has your 12-word passphrase, they have all of your funds!

This is why you need to ensure you are securing your 12-word passphrase as best as possible!

To keep your 12-word passphrase safe, you should do the following:
  • Write it down and store it in a secure location unknown to anybody else

This is usually enough for 99% of scenarios. You could also back up your passphrase in multiple different secure locations if you are worried about the original paper being lost or damaged (flood, fire, etc).

Once your 12-word passphrase is secure, you can freely use it with any Ethereum interfaces and interact with your wallets!

Now that we’ve covered the private component of a 12-word passphrase, let’s take a look at the public component - addresses!

Each wallet has one public address; an example of which is the following:

It’s quite easy to differentiate a public address from anything else (like a private key or 12-word passphrase) because every address starts with the characters ‘0x’.

Using your public address and giving it to other people, you open yourself up to receive Ether,
PRPS
,
DUBI
, or anything else.

In addition to that, since Ethereum is a public blockchain, you can use your address to view and track your transaction history!

For example, take a look at the following screenshot:

By entering your address on , you can view any of your previous transactions, keep track of your current funds, and much more!

Etherscan is an extremely powerful tool which allows you to have a good overview of everything going on with your wallet. If you are ever lost and happen to be confused about whether or not you have funds on a certain wallet address, definitely check it out on Etherscan!

Creating an Ethereum Wallet

If you would like to interact with the
Blockchain
in Clash of Streamers, or if you are looking to buy
PRPS
/
DUBI
on DubiEx - or even accept tips here on clashofstreamers.tv - you first need an Ethereum wallet!

To set up an Ethereum wallet, you have two main options:
  • Create a new wallet through the Metamask browser extension (found on metamask.io)
  • Create a new wallet through the Clash of Streamers
    Blockchain
    building

In my opinion, both of these options offer the most user-friendly way of creating a wallet.

Both of them work through the 12-word passphrase method of wallet creation. This means that if you create a wallet through Metamask, you can also import that same wallet into Clash of Streamers and have the exact same wallet in two different locations.

That way, if you were to purchase
DUBI
, or potentially sell a hero to other players for
DUBI
, you will see the changes appear in both locations at relatively similar times.

Whichever option you choose is completely up to you! If you have no interest in interacting with the
Blockchain
in Clash of Streamers, go down the Metamask route. However, if you only really care about interacting with the
Blockchain
in Clash of Streamers, create your wallet in-game!

Either option will be perfectly okay.

Once you have a wallet created, you can now store Ether,
PRPS
, and
DUBI
, trade with other people, and much more!

Transferring Ether, PRPS, or DUBI

Now that we’ve covered the concept of wallets and how to create them, transferring between wallets is fairly straightforward!

When you are looking to send some Ether (or anything else) to somebody else, the process works through the following steps:
  1. Get the address of the other person’s wallet that you are looking to send Ether to.
  2. Use a browser extension like Metamask, or Clash of Streamers, and import your personal wallet using your 12-word passphrase.
  3. Through your wallet and the interface provided by your chosen program, initiate the send process by entering the address of the person you are sending Ether to.
  4. By clicking send, your chosen program will initiate the send process and send the Ether,
    PRPS
    ,
    DUBI
, or anything else to the target address.

That is, in a nutshell, how you can send between two different wallets. You connect your wallet, get the address of the other wallet, and then send whatever you want to that address!

If you’re looking to receive something from other people, you do the opposite! Copy your Ethereum address (through Metamask or your Clash of Streamers wallet) and enter it where it’s needed. By doing so, whoever has your address can now send you Ether,
PRPS
,
DUBI
or anything else.

The Blockchain Building

If you have read through this entire guide up until this point, you should have a pretty decent understanding of the mechanics behind the Ethereum blockchain and how to use it.

In Clash of Streamers, the
Blockchain
building is essentially a user interface which allows you to interact with the Ethereum blockchain.

Everything we talked about in this guide pretty much applies to the
Blockchain
building.
For starters, the first thing you’ll do when opening the
Blockchain
building is create your first Ethereum wallet with a new 12-word passphrase. This relates back to what we talked about in the ‘12-Word Passphrases’ and ‘Wallets’ sections above.

After creating the 12-word passphrase by following the in-game instructions, you can re-import a custom 12-word passphrase, or input that new 12-word passphrase on Metamask to duplicate your new wallet.
Within the
Blockchain
building, you can send Ether to other players, you can send
DUBI
to other players, or you can copy your address so that other players can send Ether or
DUBI
to you.

It doesn’t end there though - not even close! Clash of Streamers has quite advanced functionality which allows you to do much more on the Ethereum blockchain.

Overall, some of the most significant features of the
Blockchain
building are the following:
  • You can buy and sell exported heroes/pets to other players in exchange for
    DUBI
  • You can rent exported heroes/pets to and from other players in exchange for
    DUBI
  • You can empower your heroes/pets with
    DUBI
, increasing their power and appearance

All of these features are implemented through the Ethereum blockchain. This means that once you have a hero exported to the blockchain, it is completely disconnected from your account.

For example, you can send it to other Ethereum wallets on other Clash of Streamers accounts, allowing you to sort of share your heroes between accounts. This means it becomes quite easy to ‘boost’ accounts to certain milestones if the hero is strong enough.

One of the most significant features of the blockchain is its ability to allow players to monetize their progress in Clash of Streamers, and potentially make money.

Since most of the blockchain functionality is very closely entwined with
DUBI
, you can potentially earn
DUBI
through various blockchain activities, and then sell that
DUBI
for real money in the future.

This is one of the largest, if not the largest factors that helps Clash of Streamers differentiate from other games. There isn’t any other game in existence (on mobile, console, or desktop) that implements this sort of blockchain functionality to such an extent that it gives players this strong of an opportunity to make money.

To learn all about how money can be made through the blockchain, make sure to read the guide How to Make Money in Clash of Streamers, and check out all of the specific money-making methods found within the guide.

Of course, nothing is a guarantee. However if you employ your knowledge in a very intelligent manner, you have a good chance to do so.
